Casey Anthony Death Case Trial today

Casey Anthony's story may well be among the most documented, analyzed and commented on murder cases ever. But amid all the noise and speculation, another person central to this case is often forgotten: Caylee Marie.

Nearly three years after Caylee's disappearance was first reported by her grandmother in a frantic 911 call, today, for many, begins the search for truth, accountability and justice in the 2008 death of a 2-year-old child.

Get ready for opening statements in a case that has thrust Orlando onto the international stage — for something far darker and difficult to imagine than its theme parks and attractions.

Today, the prosecution will start to lay out a case heavy with raw emotion — a story likely to be told largely through Casey Anthony's family and friends — as well as novel science.

The trick for prosecutors will be weaving the vivid description of the smell of a dead body emanating from Casey Anthony's Pontiac with the arcane forensic evidence expected to be used to bolster the state's case.

They'll have to delicately illustrate Casey Anthony's actions following her daughter's disappearance as well — the lying, the partying, the tattooing, the young woman's proceeding with life minus her daughter.
