The NFL announced just before the Super Bowl XLV game that Minnesota Vikings safety Madieu Williams has been named the Walter Payton Man of the Year.
Williams was not present at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as it is overseas visiting troops in Iraq.
"It'sa great honor to win this award on behalf of Walter Payton, one of the greatest men to ever play in the National Football League," Williams said of Iraq in a video posted on the stadium. "I'm sorry I could not be there to receive the award, but an even greater honor to be here in Iraq with Task Force Iron Horse on a goodwill tour to see the Super Bowl with our troops."
Williams wore a shirt of the 4th Infantry Division who was with the troops in the video.
Since joining the Vikings in 2008, Williams has been involved with charities such as the YMCA of the North of the Community, the United Way and preparation Havest / Seed Academy.
"It'sa great honor that has been named Madieu Walter Payton Man of the Year in the NFL," said head coach Leslie Frazier Vikings. "It's quite an achievement and one that is well deserved. Madieu is a person who cares about people. It is a prototype of a professional athlete by any means."
Williams is a product of the University of Maryland and is a veteran of seven years in the NFL.
