Perhaps nowhere are the emotions higher than here in Gainesville, where students who grew up in the shadow of the UF face the prospect of not being able to make the cut for admission. UF has seen an increasing number of applications in recent years, although the number of seats available has been limited.
Some local students are giving up their roots and turning Gator Florida State University as a backup plan, while others are looking beyond their college choices. Taylor Buchholz High School Novak said UF is your best option, but also applies to the State of Florida and a dozen other schools from as far away as Colorado.
